Troubleshooting Your Home Network -  Can't Connect to the Net

Overview of Troubleshooting Steps - 10 Minute Troubleshooting Steps

1>   Try connecting to Google or Yahoo. These two sites are usually up.

2>   Try different browsers.

3>   Reboot your router and modem. ( Cycle power on both )

4>   Open a command prompt and type in the following:

         ping   google.com

         ping   87.248.113.14      (Yahoo)

         ping   74.125.77.99        (Google)

If pinging google.com succeeded but the browser failed you have a corrupted or infected browser.

If pinging google.com failed but pinging the ip address succeeded then you have a DNS issue.

5>   Try plugging in these OPEN DNS numbers

         208.67.222.222

         208.67.220.220

6>    Run the following command to find the break in the connection:

          tracert 87.248.113.14 (Yahoo)

This command shows every hop between you and Yahoo. It will stop at the broken link.

If it gets pass your router's ip address CALL YOUR SERVICE PROVIDER.

7>    Bypass your internal router and repeat the above steps. Check for link lights.
